Fighting Fat With White Tea

10:10 PM
An extract of white tea may help fight fat, according to a recent study. In lab tests on human cells, scientists found that treatment with white-tea extract thwarted the expression of genes linked to the growth of new fat cells (also known as adipocytes). White-tea extract also appeared to promote the breakdown of fat in existing adipocytes.

It's too early to tell whether white tea might make for an effective anti-obesity agent. Less processed than black or green tea, the brew has also been shown to inhibit DNA mutations (which could, in turn, help prevent cancer), improve the immune function of skin cells and shield them from the sun's harmful effects, and slow the growth of bacteria that cause Staphylococcus infections.

Since white tea is so delicate in flavor, it's important to brew it in water with a temperature of 170 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit (76 to 85 degrees Celsius), according to tea experts

Ginseng May Alleviate ADHD

9:50 PM
Ginseng shows promise as an herbal treatment for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), suggests a small study. Researchers investigated the use of Panax ginseng among three 14- to 17-year-old males diagnosed with ADHD, concluding that the herb "may be a slightly effective treatment for ADHD."

Past studies have shown that Panax ginseng may strengthen immunity, aid in the management of diabetes, and enhance mood. Meanwhile, another form of the herb (American ginseng) has been found to benefit children with ADHD when combined with ginkgo biloba.

A chronic condition that leads to inattention and hyperactive, impulsive behavior, ADHD is often treated with psychological counseling and/or medication. Although the exact causes of ADHD are unknown, factors such as maternal exposure to toxins, a family history of the condition, and premature birth may increase risk. Preliminary research indicates that practicing yoga may be an effective complementary treatment for children struggling with ADHD.

Tongkat Ali

9:42 PM
What is Tongkat Ali

Other Names: Eurycoma longifolia, LongjackTongkat Ali is a tree native to Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. The part of the tree used medicinally is the root.

Why Do People Use Tongkat Ali?

Tongkat Ali was dubbed the "Asian Viagra" in a May 1999 report in the New Sunday Times. It has been used in Malaysia for many years by men to increase sexual desire, libido, sexual performance and to treat erectile dysfunction. Tongkat ali appears to work by increasing levels of the hormone testosterone. Testosterone is primarily responsible for the growth and development of male reproductive organs, including the penis, testicles, scrotum, prostate, and seminal vesicles. Normal testosterone levels maintain energy level, mood, fertility, and sexual desire. Because of its testosterone-enhancing properties, tongkat ali is also used by bodybuilders to increase muscle mass and strength.

Safety

Reported side effects include insomnia, anxiety, and restlessness. Tongkat ali should not be used by pregnant or nursing women or children. Because tongkat ali increases testosterone levels it should not be used by men with breast cancer or prostate cancer, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, kidney disease, liver disease, or sleep apnea. Tongkat ali should not be used by people with weakened immune systems as some evidence suggests it may further weaken immune function.

Drug Interactions

Tongkat ali should not be used by people taking immunosuppressant drugs. It is especially important to tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking insulin. Tongkat ali may decrease blood sugar levels
